In the other words, SEO focuses on achieving higher rankings for specific and targeted keywords.
Why Search Engine Positioning Important?
An industry study by backlinko discovers that top results get the highest number of organic clicks.
Search engine positioning is all about getting higher ranks on the search results. If you properly look around the Google SERPs, it’s not about the top 10 links anymore.
As of now, Google’s first page contains a lot of SERP features, Here are the following.
- Featured Snippets
- ‘People also ask’ Box
- Video Results
- Top Stories
- Q&A on Google
Let’s have a look at few examples:
This is the top result for the keyword ‘digital marketing’. As you can see here the top result is a Feature snippet and the next result is the ‘People also ask’ box.
Now let’s try another keyword and let’s see what happens.
As you can see in the above screenshot, I have searched for the keyword ‘SEO Tutorial’ the top result is an article and the next results are videos with timestamps.
So that being said, Search engine positioning is not just about moving up few spots. It’s now about ranking higher as you can. Now you have options to rank multiple times for the same keywords and on the same page.
Now let’s cover how to maximize this position on Google.
How to maximize Search Engine Positioning in Google
1. Re-Optimize Existing Content
You should first focus on your existing pages. Make sure your current pages are well optimized for SEO.
Do you know why it’s important? Well if you are ranking on the 1st page or 2nd page then google probably thinks that your content is relevant for your target keywords.
By doing On-Page SEO and a few Technical SEO you can easily optimize those pages for better ranking chances.
The best way to find where to start is Google Search Console. From here you easily find out the keywords which you are ranking maybe 10 or more. You should start working on those keywords.
You can improve a lot here. You have to figure out whether you need to update the On-Page SEO or you need to update your content with new data.
You may discover that your page needs to load a bit faster, then you should probably focus on the page speed factor.
2. Use Internal Linking to Bump Up Your Site
Once you have done the above optimization, now it’s time to focus on the internal linkings.
You want to add internal links on your authority pages and have those pages links back to your pages that need a little bump up.
I use Ahrefs to find out my top-performing & high-authority pages. It’s a great tool if you want to plan for keyword research and other SEO performance.
Also, one point to note when you linking your pages internally. Make sure to use keyword-rich anchor text to link your pages. It will help Google to understand your keyword and its related pages.
For example:
If you have an Article named – ‘5 FREE Keyword Research Tools to start as a Beginner’. Hen your anchor text should be near about – ‘free keyword research tools’.
3. Optimize Your Content for Organic CTR
Google uses CTR to figure out the relevant result for a particular keyword. If you can increase your average CTR then Google understands that people want to see your post as the top result. Then Google will bump you up a few spots.
On the other hand, if your CTR decreases by 2-3% then Google will understand that people don’t want to see this result and it affects the ranking.
4. Achieve Multiple Results for The Same Keywords
Now, here comes the advance-SEO strategy. Ranking in multiple spots for the same keywords is a great strategy to improve your site positioning in the SERPs.
So for businesses, it’s worth it to focus on this strategy. Especially, for the keywords that are super important for your business.
Now the question is, how you can achieve that. Well, 1st of all make sure to properly optimize everything as I mentioned on the above points.
You can create 2 similar types of an article with the same targeted keywords and make them interlinks. That way Google will understand that these 2 article supports each other.
Also, another way is that if you are producing video content on YouTube then create a similar topic with the same targeted keywords. This will increase the chance to rank multiple ways on the search engine.
